How the Navy Method Works

The US Navy body fat formula estimates body fat percentage from a few circumference measurements — height, neck, waist, and (for women) hips — using a logarithmic formula developed and validated by the US Navy as a low-cost alternative to skinfold calipers or DEXA scans.

For best accuracy, measure with a flexible tape at the same time of day, and measure the waist at the navel and the neck just below the larynx.

Frequently Asked Questions

How accurate is the Navy method?

It's reasonably accurate for most people, typically within a few percentage points of more precise methods like DEXA scans, though accuracy can vary for very lean or very muscular individuals.

Why does the calculation differ for men and women?

The Navy formula uses different measurement points and coefficients for men and women because typical fat distribution patterns differ by sex, women's formula also includes a hip measurement.

What's a healthy body fat percentage?

Healthy ranges are typically cited as roughly 10-20% for men and 18-28% for women, though ranges vary by age and individual health goals.
