How to Calculate a Discount

To find a sale price, multiply the original price by the discount percentage to get the amount saved, then subtract that from the original price. When two discounts are stacked (like an extra 10% off an already-reduced item), the second discount applies to the already-discounted price, not the original — which is why stacked discounts don't simply add up.

Formula

Sale price = Original price × (1 − discount %)

For stacked discounts, apply each one in sequence to the running price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do two 20% discounts equal 40% off?

No. Two stacked 20% discounts equal a 36% effective discount, not 40%, because the second discount is applied to the already-reduced price.

How do I calculate the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 minus the discount as a decimal). For example, a $75 item at 25% off originally cost $75 / 0.75 = $100.

Is sales tax included in this calculation?

No, this calculator only applies the discount. Add any applicable sales tax separately to the final price.
