How Paint Quantity Is Calculated

This calculator multiplies your wall width (or room perimeter) by wall height to find total wall area, subtracts standard door and window areas, then multiplies by your number of coats and divides by your paint's coverage rate (check the coverage listed on your paint can, it's often around 10 m² per liter, but varies by brand and surface).

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I don't know my paint's coverage rate?

Check the label on the paint can, most brands list coverage per liter or per gallon. This calculator defaults to 10 m² per liter as a common average, but adjust it to match your specific paint.

Should I round up my paint purchase?

Yes, paint is usually sold in fixed can sizes, so round up to the nearest available size and consider keeping a little extra for future touch-ups.

Does this account for texture or porous surfaces?

No, textured or very porous surfaces may absorb more paint than the standard coverage rate, adjust the coverage number down if that applies to your walls.
