How Tile Quantity Is Calculated

This calculator divides your total floor or wall area by the area of a single tile to get a base tile count, then adds a waste allowance to cover cuts, breakage, and pattern matching. A 10% waste allowance is standard for straight-lay patterns; diagonal or complex patterns may need 15-20%.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much waste allowance should I use?

10% is standard for simple grid layouts. Diagonal layouts, herringbone patterns, or rooms with lots of cuts and corners often need 15-20% extra.

Should I buy tiles from the same batch?

Yes, tile color and shade can vary slightly between production batches, buy all your tiles (including your waste buffer) from the same batch/lot when possible.

Does this account for grout lines?

No, this calculates based on the tile's own dimensions. Grout lines are typically thin enough that they don't significantly change the tile count for most projects.
