Mean, Median, and Mode Explained

Mean is the sum of all numbers divided by how many there are, the everyday "average". Median is the middle value when the numbers are sorted (or the average of the two middle values if there's an even count). Mode is the value(s) that appear most often. Range is the difference between the highest and lowest value.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if there's no repeated number for the mode?

If every number appears exactly once, there is no mode, the calculator will indicate this.

Can there be more than one mode?

Yes, if two or more numbers tie for the most frequent occurrence, all of them are shown as the mode (this is called multimodal).

Why use median instead of mean?

Median is less affected by extreme outliers than mean, so it can better represent a 'typical' value in skewed data sets, like household income.
