Add each course with its letter grade and credit hours. The GPA is the total grade points divided by total credits. Plus and minus grades use the common 4.0 scale.
The formula
GPA = Σ (grade points × credits) ÷ Σ credits
Worked exampleA (4.0) in a 3-credit course and B (3.0) in a 4-credit course → (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43.
Frequently asked questions
Do plus and minus grades count?
Yes: A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on.
Is this the same at every school?
No. Some schools use different scales or weights for honours courses.
