How Ratios Are Simplified
A ratio is simplified the same way a fraction is: by dividing both numbers by their greatest common divisor (GCD). This gives you the smallest whole-number ratio that represents the same proportion, for example 12:18 simplifies to 2:3.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does a ratio like 2:3 mean?
It means for every 2 units of the first quantity, there are 3 units of the second, the actual values could be 2 and 3, or 20 and 30, or any pair in that same proportion.
Can I use decimals in a ratio?
This calculator works with whole numbers for exact simplification. For decimal inputs, consider scaling both values up to whole numbers first (e.g. multiply both by 10).
How is a ratio different from a fraction?
A ratio compares two separate quantities (like 2:3), while a fraction typically represents a part of a whole (like 2/5 of a total). They use the same simplification math though.
